Transfer pump Controllers

Transfer pump Controllers In a number of industries including photo labs, electroplating works, chemical blending plants and effluent treatment works there is frequently a need to pump liquids from one tank to another or to a drain. To do this automatically requires control gear incorporating level sensors and various protective devices.

Rockwell Hitec TPC transfer pump controllers are very versatile controllers for switching pumps and solenoid valves to control the transfer of liquids between different levels. The two models differ in being able to control respectively 1 and 2 liquids.

The controls incorporate the following features:-

  • 3 Level sensors which can be arranged, by means of an internal switch, as either 1 sensor in the feed tank and 2 in the receiving tank or 2 in the feed tank and 1 in the receiving tank. One of these is used as an empty feed tank sensor to prevent the pump running dry.
  • For conducting solutions the level sensors are conductivity probes exited with low voltage AC to avoid electrolytic effects. Other types of level sensors can be used for non-conducting liquids.
  • Overflow protection (float switch) in the receiving tank.
  • Provision for a solenoid valve in the pump line to avoid run back. In the case of model TPC1 the solenoid valve is switched by a separate delayed output to prevent pressure surges which could damage the pump.
  • Level sensor status indicators.
  • 3 Position AUTO-OFF-MANUAL operation switch.

Depending on how the level sensors have been installed there are two different operational modes in the "AUTO" position.

1 Level Sensor in the Feed Tank and 2 in the Receiving Tank

As soon as the liquid falls below the lower sensor in the receiving tank, the pump will start and run until the level has reached the upper sensor. This configuration is used when a small tank is kept filled from a larger tank. Should the feed tank be pumped empty i.e. the level falls below the sensor, the output will be cut so as to avoid the pump running dry.

2 Level Sensors in the Feed Tank and 1 in the Receiving Tank

This is used for pumping from a small tank, such as a sump, to a large tank or a drain. As soon as the level in the feed tank reaches the upper sensor the pump will run until the level has dropped to the lower sensor. Should the level in the receiving tank reach the probe the pump will stop.

As a further safety precaution in both modes there is provision for a float switch to be fitted above the solution level of the receiving tank and in the event of a fault causing the level to rise it will cut off the power to the pump.

The controllers are normally mounted near the pumps and/or solenoid valves so as to keep the power wiring to a minimum. The level sensors and overflow protection switches operate at low voltage and are connected to the controllers with telephone type cable. The receiving tank can be several hundred metres from the feed tank at either higher or lower level.

The controllers are mounted in plastic boxes and installation is extremely simple.
